CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Beginning Wheel Throwing at ClearWater Ceramics Center

Designed for those who are new to the pottery wheel or looking to revisit the fundamentals. Whether it’s your first time touching clay or you’re building confidence in your basic skills, this course will guide you through the foundational techniques of centering, pulling walls, trimming, and glazing.

Throughout the 8-week session, students will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of guided project prompts that align with their interests and goals.

Focus Areas - You’re welcome to focus on one area or explore multiple prompts throughout the course:

Small Sets: Practice repetition and consistency by making sets of mugs, planters, or vases. A great option for those who enjoy functional wares and want to explore form variations within a theme.

Decorative Focus: Learn how to create visually engaging pieces by incorporating intentional form and surface decoration. Ideal for those who want to add a personal or creative touch to their functional work.

Foundations First: Concentrate on the core mechanics of wheel throwing—centering, pulling, shaping, and trimming. This path is perfect for students who want to build a strong technical base before moving on to more complex forms.

Each class includes step-by-step instruction, hands-on demonstrations, and time for practice during Open Studio hours. You’ll finish the course with a collection of your own glazed and finished pieces, along with a solid foundation for continuing your pottery journey.
