AUGUST 2025 Demo /Monthly Meeting Program: Darryl Jones:

Turning a Hollowform Ornament

Tuesday, August 19, 2025, 6:30pm

Darryl is a woodworker, woodturner, content creator, instructor, and the founder of Dread Knot Woodshop.  A longtime woodworker, Darryl was introduced to woodturning a few years ago and has been exploring the craft ever since.  Some of his favorite turning projects include hollow forms, finials, and lidded boxes, but he is also willing to take a shot at new, challenging projects when given the opportunity.  Darryl has worked with several vendors in roles such as brand ambassador, instructor, demonstrator, and as a member of product development teams.  He has been brand ambassador for Robert Sorby for several years, traveling throughout the country and demonstrating their line of tools.

This demo will cover turning a hollowform ornament.  All steps will be covered starting with hollowing the globe and finishing up with turning a finial, so involving two of Darryl’s favorite turning forms.  Darryl tackles this project in a unique way that uses less material and provides a more consistent and higher quality outcome.  Darryl uses a few shop made implements to make the project more “doable”, and he will share tips on the tools and techniques as he works his way through the demonstration.  The holidays are just around the corner.  Hopefully, we will all learn something new during this demo and be inspired to try making this project ourselves.

The Southern Piedmont Woodturners meet for fellowship and technical demonstrations on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm until 9:00 pm.  We meet at our studio (#122) at ClearWater Arts Center & Studios,  223 Crowell Drive NW, Concord, NC 28025.  Members begin to arrive for informal gathering around 5:30 pm; the meeting formally starts at 6:30 pm and the program is usually finished by 9:00 pm.

We usually have an "Instant Gallery" of members’ items they bring to demonstrate how previous demonstrators have influenced their work.  We also have a raffle of items to raise funds for the club.

In addition to ClearWater Arts Center & Studios, the SPW is associated with the Cabarrus County Arts Council (CCAC), the American Association of Woodturners (AAW), and the North Carolina Woodturners Association (NCWA).

To inquire about club activities, see the club website.  Or, you may call the ClearWater Arts Center and speak with ClearWater Coordinator, Sarah Gay at 704-920-6600 who can help direct your call.
