With years of experience and numerous awards, we are pleased to announce that JJ Jiang will teach an advanced beginner/intermediate watercolor workshop for the Cabarrus Art Guild. CAG is able to offer this opportunity at subsidized pricing due to a grant from the Grassroots Arts Program of the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency, and the Cabarrus Arts Council.

JJ’s teaching is based on his belief that four fundamentals apply to all subject matter and even across mediums. JJ’s demos include clear instructions on these fundamentals: drawing, value, color, and edges. JJ will also discuss and demonstrate various techniques in watercolor, but he emphasizes the need for all artists to go beyond technique to explore the creative drive that has brought them to the easel.

In this one-day workshop, you’ll be using watercolors to create a beautiful landscape painting. After JJ’s step-by-step landscape demo, students will have the remainder of the class time to work on their own painting (from the photo reference provided) while JJ gives one-on-one instruction tailored to students’ individual levels. To wrap up, as time allows, JJ will have a brief critique and a question and answer session.

A list of supplies will be provided at registration.

Samples of JJ’s work.

JJ Jiang is an award-winning artist and a gifted instructor. He is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and a North Carolina Watercolor Society Master Member. Though accomplished in watercolor, he is a versatile artist - excelling in drawing, oils, and Chinese brush painting. Batik Turtles stitched 60 percent.LR.jpg
Batik Butterflies 60 perc.LR.jpg

The batik process generates complex, stitchable designs with wax resist and color layering on fabric. Wax is applied to fabric with a stamp called a tjap (pronounced “chop”). Several choices of images are offered: turtle, irises, dragonfly, butterfly, lily, gecko, and square geometric. Each student receives guidance for developing design elements and using subtle color concepts such as value contrast, temperature contrast and color passages to unify the design. Colors are painted in layers alternating with wax. An optional crackling technique produces a marbled effect, it’s seen as navy blue background lines in the turtle design shown. Finally, the piece is ironed to remove the wax and set the paint colors.

Stitching suggestions for embroidery, beading, and quilting are offered.

Supply Kit Includes:

Three 12 x 12 samples of Prepared for Dyeing (PFD) cotton, more as needed

Paint, brushes, and non-latex gloves

Shared items are wax, heaters and brushes for wax, paint, iron and ironing board

Students need to bring:

Brown paper grocery bags, a 4” of newspaper

Safety measures are emphasized throughout the class. Instructor provides plastic to cover tables and drying area, one iron and ironing board, wax heaters, water bucket, hair dryer, fans, hangers for drying.
